Accelerating Writing Years 7-10

A high-impact professional learning day equipping NZ teachers with research-proven approaches to accelerate student writing progress. Based on the science of learning, this workshop delivers practical strategies for immediate classroom implementation. Participants will gain tools to scaffold different writing types across all curriculum areas.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • A framework for teaching writing skills

  • Guidance on explicit teaching of writing skills

  • Guidance on how to teach sentence-level foundations that transform writing quality,

  • Practical strategies on how to develop paragraph construction skills

  • Guidance on developing self-regulation skills to foster independent writers.

Morning session (9:30 - 1:00)

  • Theoretical Foundations: The Science of Writing Instruction

  • Sentences: The Foundations for Good Writing

  • Building Complexity: Advanced Sentence Construction

 

Afternoon session (1:45 - 3:30)

  • Constructing Effective Paragraphs

  • Developing Multi-Paragraph Texts

  • Self-Regulated Writing Strategies and Implementation

Elena Ciobanu is a distinguished educator with extensive experience facilitating PLD for hundreds of educators in evidence-based Structured Literacy. Her qualifications include a BEd, MEdDevPsych, and a SPELDNZ Teaching Certificate, with ongoing doctoral studies in effective PLD.

Structured Literacy for Secondary

This half day course series provides insights from the Science of Learning about how the brain learns best with particular emphasis on the developmental needs of adolescents. The course is designed specifically for high school teachers.

It provides an introduction to strategies based on principles of effective instruction and challenges you to begin to implement meaningful changes to support effective literacy instruction.

9:00 - 9:45 The Science of Learning and Structured Literacy Approaches with particular emphasis on the needs of adolescent learners

9:45 - 10:30 Teaching reading and writing skills: a comprehensive and coordinated approach

10:45 - 11:30 Implementation guidance in a secondary environment

11:30 - 12:00 Addressing the needs of diverse learners
